Change and the Unknown

“The moment you decide, your life begins to change.”


As the year comes to a close, I find myself thinking about change and the unknown that always walks alongside it.


We say we know change is inevitable. We coach it. We lead through it. We even take pride in being adaptable. And yet, no matter how seasoned we are, change always asks something of us.


Even for those of us who like change… Even for those of us who are good at beginning again…


There is always a goodbye.

Currently, my husband and I are considering a move. The pull is strong, being closer to our children and grandchildren. That “yes” feels full of love, alignment, and purpose. And still, there is another truth living right beside it.


I love the place I call home. I love the friends woven into my daily life. I love the familiar paths, the memories layered into ordinary moments. This is the part of change we don’t talk about enough.


Change doesn’t just open doors. It closes them too.

And closure, even when chosen, can stir grief. Here’s the illusion we often carry: that change takes time. But the reality is more confronting and more empowering.


Change doesn’t happen over time. Change happens the moment you decide.

The decision is the pivot. Time simply catches up. What we often label as “needing more time” is usually something else entirely:


  • A need to emotionally release what was

  • A fear of who we’ll be without the familiar

  • A hesitation to step fully into the unknown version of ourselves


Because change is never just external. It’s not the move. Not the new role. Not the new season. Change is internal.


It’s a shift in perspective. A change of belief. A shift in how we see ourselves and the world. And ultimately, a change in how we act and who we become.


Every moment gives us the opportunity for conscious change through the choices we make. Not in the big announcements. Not in the bold declarations. But in the quiet choices. Each choice subtly alters our direction. Each decision recalibrates our course.

That’s why the real question isn’t Why change? The real question is:


Do I realize that every choice I make is already creating change?

Leadership works the same way. People often believe transformation happens after a promotion, after a reorg, after the circumstances shift. But that’s backward.


The leader you become before the change determines what the change becomes.

This is true in our lives. It’s true in our careers. It’s true in our families and organizations. When something ends, it’s not a failure. It’s information. It’s a signal that something has completed its purpose. Endings are not punishments. They are thresholds.


Something is being cleared so something else can be born. And here’s the part I want to leave you with as this year closes:


You don’t have to rush the goodbye. And you don’t have to see the next chapter yet fully. You only have to be honest about the choice you’re standing in.


Choosing Change: Four Simple Ways to Change


  1. Name what’s complete. Be honest about what no longer fits and without judgment.

  2. Decide what you’re moving toward. Clarity comes from direction, not certainty.

  3. Take one intentional step. Small, conscious moves create real momentum.

  4. Honor what mattered. Grieve what you’re releasing. And trust that the part of you stepping forward is wiser than the part that’s afraid.


The unknown doesn’t mean unprepared. It means unfinished. And that’s where possibility lives.

As we step into a new year, may we stop asking for certainty—and start listening for clarity. May we recognize that the life we are becoming requires the courage to release the one we’ve outgrown. And may we remember that change doesn’t begin when everything feels safe.


It begins when we choose. With honesty. With intention. And with heart.
